Gopi

Gopi is a 2019 Nepali drama film directed by Dipendra Lama, who also wrote the story of the film. The screenplay was written by Samipya Raj Timalsena, and the film was produced by Shreedhar Poudel and Aarohi K.C. under the banner of Aarohi Entertainment. It was distributed by OSR Digital and MeroFilm. The movie stars Bipin Karki, Barsha Raut and Surakshya Panta in the leading roles.

Gopi was released in Nepali cinemas on February 1, 2019. The film tells the story of Sudhir, played by Bipin Karki, a university gold medalist in Masters of Arts who works as a college teacher and also owns a cow farm in Tokha. Sudhir is in love with his batchmate and colleague Sujata, played by Surakshya Panta. Although Sudhir is devoted to his profession and his farming work, his friends and family constantly pressure him to go abroad for a better life. Sudhir, however, decides to stay in Nepal and build his farm, remaining firm in his choice. His decision puts strain on his relationship with Sujata, who is uncomfortable with his involvement in farming. Meanwhile, a veterinarian named Usha, played by Barsha Raut, enters his life in unexpected ways, adding a new dimension to his story.

The film addresses the problems faced by farmers across Nepal, and it was praised for its uniquely fascinating premise and its departure from the usual commercial formulas of Nepali cinema. The Kathmandu Post described it as a no-frills, homegrown production that warrants a watch, noting the film's documentary-style filmmaking approach that avoided flashy sets and song-and-dance sequences in favour of a more realistic lens.

The performances in the film were widely appreciated. Bipin Karki delivered a restrained and natural performance in the lead role, while Surakshya Panta impressed as his girlfriend. Barsha Raut, though initially slightly uncomfortable in the role of a vet doctor, improved as the story progressed. Supporting performances from Saroj Aryal, Bhola Sapkota and Ankeet Khadka were also noted as natural and effective.

The music of the film was composed by Arjun Pokharel, and the editing was done by Nimesh Shrestha. The film's realistic tone and meaningful message made it stand out among the releases of its time.

Gopi remains an important film for its sincere portrayal of a young man's decision to stay in Nepal despite social and political pressures to leave.
