Behuli From Meghauli

Behuli From Meghauli is a 2024 Nepali comedy-drama film written and directed by Sajan Kafle and Aakash Baral, marking the directorial debut of both filmmakers. The movie was produced by the real-life celebrity couple Nischal Basnet and Swastima Khadka under the banners of Black Horse Pictures and Meghauli Films, and both of them also star in the leading roles.

Behuli From Meghauli was released in Nepali cinemas on October 3, 2024, coinciding with the festival of Ghatasthapana. Interestingly, the film broke the tradition of releasing new movies on Fridays and opened on a Thursday. The film has a running time of 2 hours and 13 minutes and was made on a budget of about 1.5 crore rupees, collecting around 2.25 crore rupees in its first three days at the box office. It was shot in the picturesque village of Meghauli in Chitwan, which gives the movie its beautiful riverside settings.

The story revolves around Meena, played by Swastima Khadka, a fun-loving woman of about thirty years who has been waiting for seven long years for her boyfriend Niraj, played by Nischal Basnet, who is returning from Australia. However, instead of marrying her, Niraj breaks up with Meena, revealing that he is in love with another woman named Ishita, played by Rakshya Thapa. Heartbroken, Meena finds herself under intense pressure from her family and society to get married as soon as possible.

Her father Makar Dhoj, played by Lokendra Lekhak, and her mother Saraswati, played by Siru Bista, desperately begin searching for a suitable groom for their eldest daughter, even resorting to a local matchmaker who runs an online matrimonial platform called Bihe Bhayo dot com. Meena, however, refuses to let go of Niraj and goes to extreme lengths to sabotage his new relationship, from changing the couple's horoscope compatibility to visiting his parents. Meanwhile, her relatives push her to marry a drug addict, and a younger man named Siddhartha, played by Shishir Siwakoti, enters her life after saving her from a scooter accident.

The film explores the pressures that Nepali society places on unmarried women, especially as they approach thirty, and contrasts traditional matchmaking with modern ideas of love and individual choice. Bijay Baral provides comic relief as Meena's supportive maternal uncle, while Simran Khadka appears as her sister who helps her escape the house during a dramatic climax. The songs of the film, especially the popular track Udayo Mann, were widely shared on social media.

The film received mixed reviews, with The Kathmandu Post criticising the story while praising Swastima Khadka's stellar performance, and other reviewers applauding the film for addressing issues rooted in the experiences of Nepali audiences.
