Buy NowSanghuro is a 2013 Nepali psycho-social drama film directed by Joes Pandey and produced by Sameer Mainali under the banner of Sameer Mainali Production in association with Mountain River Films. The movie was released in theaters on May 10, 2013, and stars Sushank Mainali as Krishna, Deeya Maskey as Kamala, Aruna Karki as Krishna's mother, Dayahang Rai as Tika and Buddhi Tamang as Nare, with Rabi Giri as Krishna's father and Bijay Baral as Daju.
The story is built around the members of a lower-middle-class family living in an urban slum. Krishna works as a paperboy in the morning and lives in a one-room house with his mother, who works as a sweeper and household help. He falls in love with Kamala, a girl who works as a house helper for a middle-class family, and they get married. However, life is anything but easy for the family. Krishna suffers from a lack of money and proper employment, and the dissatisfaction of his desires due to physical space issues pushes him toward desperation. The film involves the psycho-social conflict of characters that leads to unusual circumstances and raises unsolved questions, with the ever-present insecurity of poverty and the fear that their house might collapse.
The story and screenplay were written by Binod Paudel, the cinematography was handled by Sushan Prajapati, and the music was composed by Madan Gopal, with background score by Udgam Pariyar and Jibesh Shah. The lyrics were written by Abeeral Thapa, and the film was edited by Anjjay Khadka, with sound design by Uttam Neupane.
Sanghuro received wide critical acclaim and won the National Film Award in 2014 in three categories: Best Film, Best Actor for Sushank Mainali, and Best Screenplay for Binod Paudel. At the NEFTA Film Awards 2014, Dayahang Rai won Best Actor in a Character Role and Aruna Karki won Best Actress in a Character Role. At the SAARC Film Festival 2014 in Colombo, the film was awarded the silver medal, and director Joes Pandey received the special jury award. Sanghuro also became the first Nepalese film to be telecast on a major international television channel, Channel 4 of the United Kingdom.
Critics praised the film as a simple portrayal of difficult lives that leaves the audience with a heavy heart, making it one of the most significant social dramas in the history of Nepali cinema.
