Aama, which means "Mother" in Nepali, is the first Nepali film that was produced inside the country of Nepal. The movie was made under the order of King Mahendra to develop the Nepali cinema and to promote the Nepali art and culture, and it was produced by the Information Department of the Government of Nepal, with the famous Indian-based Nepali director Hira Singh Khatri brought in to direct the picture. The film was released in the cinemas in October 1964 and runs for about two hours and three minutes, and it became the first Nepalese film to be produced in Nepal, since the earlier Nepali movies had been made outside the country.

The story of the film follows a young man who returns home after serving in the army of his country. The veteran actor Shiva Shankar Manandhar, a famous singer and songwriter of Nepal, was chosen for the lead role after the original choice for the part fell sick, and the theatrical performer Bhuwan Chand played the leading female role. The film also features Basundhara Bhusal, Chaitya Devi, Hira Singh Khatri himself and Hari Prasad Rimal in the supporting roles, and at the age of fourteen the actor Hari Prasad Rimal made his acting debut in this movie. Since there were no professional actors in Nepal at that time, the director chose the singers and the theatre artists of the country for the cast of the film.

In the early years of the Nepali cinema there was no professional infrastructure in the country to produce, distribute and present the Nepali movies, so the post-production and the indoor filming of Aama were mainly done in Kolkata, India. The music of the film was composed by W. Balsara, with the title song sung by Shiva Shankar Manandhar and Nati Kaji. The movie is a patriotic drama that tells the story of the love of a mother and the sacrifice of a soldier, and it is remembered today as the foundation of the Nepali film industry.
