Ghamad Shere

Ghamad Shere is a 2019 Nepali romantic comedy drama film written, directed and produced by Hem Raj B.C., with the film co-produced by Simosh Sunuwar, and released in theaters on 29 November 2019. The film stars Nischal Basnet in the lead role of Shere, with Swastima Khadka, Sushma Niraula and Badal Bhatta in the principal roles, and the celebrated actress Gauri Malla in a special appearance. The film was promoted as a social comedy about a stubborn returnee migrant worker and his absurd legal battle, and it was described by its makers as a blend of political satire and romance.

The story follows Shere, a migrant worker who returns from abroad to his village in Nepal, determined to do something with his life back home. He has returned from Doha with his earnings and is determined to start farming: he buys a piece of land that, unfortunately, has been cleverly sold to him by a local leader: the land lies in the flood-prone area of the river. His wife is not happy, believing that her husband is going to waste their money. Shere begins farming on the purchased land, but one night a flood wipes out his land and leaves him broke and humiliated.

As his fortunes collapse, Shere discovers that his wife has been having an affair, and she flees with her lover, leaving Shere with his son. He is taken care of by his sister-in-law, played by Swastima Khadka, and the two develop a relationship. Advised to take the matter to court, Shere files a lawsuit - and in a famously absurd twist of the plot, he decides to sue the river itself for destroying his land. The legal battle becomes the comedy and satire of the film: the bureaucracy, the lawyers, the local power dynamics and the political connections of the countryside, with the film poking fun at the way justice works for the common man.

Ultimately, Shere wins his court battle and is awarded the river contract as compensation, and his wife returns, but he chooses his sister-in-law. The film stars Nischal Basnet as Shere, Swastima Khadka as Gauri, Sushma Niraula and Badal Bhatta, with Lokendra Lekhak, Saroj Aryal, Gauri Malla, Roydeep Shrestha and others in support.

Ghamad Shere was appreciated for its combination of an unusual story, the performance of Nischal Basnet and the satire on the absurdities of the Nepali legal and political system, and it remains a memorable entry in the comedy dramas of the late 2010s.
