Michael Adhikari

Michael Adhikari is a 2022 Nepali family drama and comedy film based on the story and direction of the television director Ranjeet Rauniyar, known for TV series like the crime patrol. The movie was presented by Udhav Poudel and produced by Nirak Poudel under the banner of Gopikrishna Movies, and the digital rights of the film were held by OSR Digital. The film was released in the cinemas of Nepal on 3 Bhadra 2079, which falls on the Gregorian date of 19 August 2022, and it runs for about two hours and ten minutes. It is a unique movie for the Nepali cinema of that year, because it talks about a topic that is very rarely discussed on the screen: the surrogate mother.

The story follows a poor man whose name is Michael Adhikari. He lives in the confusion of the city with his wife and earns with difficulty, and his dream of becoming rich quickly pushes him onto a dangerous road. He tries to convince his wife to agree to carry the child of a rich childless couple in her womb for money. After the struggle of the family, the wife finally says yes, because the money is necessary for them. But when the baby is born after nine months, the woman, who has become a mother, refuses to hand over the child to the couple who paid the money, and a great battle starts between the two families. Michael and his wife must then face the moral and emotional values of their deal, and the film draws both sadness and laughter from this strange situation of modern society.

The lead roles of the picture are played by Saugat Malla as Michael and Srishti Shrestha as his wife, and together they give the film its heart. The rest of the ensemble includes Ashant Sharma, Lunibha Tuladhar, Anny Kunwar, Hemanta Budhathoki, Bidhya Karki, Jemima Toms, Dilip Bohora and Kendra Bhattarai, with the child artists Arya Poudel and Kevin Pariyar in the younger roles. The music of the film was composed by Shambhujit Baskota and Rev Singh, the cinematography was done by Raju Bikram Thapa, and the editing was handled by Mitra D. Gurung, while the screenplay and the dialogues were written by Shailesh Kandel Chhetri. The film gave the audience both laughter and tears, and carried a message about the love of a mother and the sacrifice of a family in the Nepali society.
