Refugee is a 2016 Nepali drama film directed by Uday Subba, who also wrote the story, and produced by Manoj Rai and Dipesh Subba under the Jay Shree Buddha Subba Films banner. The movie was released in January 2016 and features Jeevan Luitel and Rista Basnet in the lead roles, with Surbir Pandit, Ram Phag, Uma Shrestha, Rajesh Lepcha, Sanjaya Neupane, Bhupendra Lingden, Bishwo Mukhiya, Bipana Basnet, Mohan Niraula, Ashok Sharma and Neer Bikram Shah in supporting roles.

The film tells the story of Nepali-speaking Bhutanese refugees who were forced to leave Bhutan and settled in refugee camps in Nepal. As the title suggests, the movie portrays the lives of young refugees and the rebellion that grows out of their frustration and struggle. Actor Jeevan Luitel appears as the leader of the refugee community, guiding his people through their hardships. The movie examines how their lives were affected by displacement and shows the ups and downs of refugees staying in Nepal in an entertaining way.

The music of Refugee was composed by Bikash Chaudhary, while the editing was handled by Tara Thapa. The film's soundtrack included the popular song Malai Ta Bhutan Nai, which expressed the refugees' longing for their homeland. The movie was produced with the support of the Bhutanese refugee community and gained special significance among Nepali-speaking Bhutanese people living abroad.

Refugee received attention beyond Nepal's borders, particularly among the Bhutanese diaspora in North America. The Canadian Bhutanese Society arranged special screenings of the film, including a screening at the Movie Mill theater in Lethbridge, Canada in March 2016, showing how the movie resonated with refugees who had resettled in third countries.

Director Uday Subba was an experienced figure in the Nepali film industry, having worked as an action director, lyricist and filmmaker on many earlier projects. With Refugee, he brought a serious social subject to the big screen, giving voice to the thousands of Bhutanese refugees whose stories were rarely told in mainstream Nepali cinema.
