Buy NowLalpurja is a 2018 Nepali social drama film directed by the popular filmmaker Nigam Shrestha, known as the director of the hit comedy film Chhadke, and released in theaters on 19 January 2018. The film stars Saugat Malla and Bipin Karki in the lead roles, with Menuka Pradhan, Harihar Sharma, Anil Pandey, Kamal Mani Nepal, Aaslesha Thakuri, Miruna Magar, Mishree Thapa, Kumar Nagarkoti and Kameshor Chaurasiya in the supporting cast. The title 'Lalpurja' is the name of the red title deed of the land, the official land ownership document of Nepal, and, as the title suggests, the entire story of the film revolves around the issue of land ownership in the country and the disputes that arise over it.
The story of the film is centered around the conflict over land: the film tells the story of the families who are caught in the disputes over the land of the villages, the story of the long-lasting quarrels between the neighbors and the relatives, the manipulations of the influential people of the society and the fate of the poor villagers who fight for their right over their land. The drama moves between the villages and the events of the society to show how the greed for land poisons the relationships of the villages and how the vulnerable people suffer the same. The story of the film remains rooted in one of the most sensitive social issues of the villages of Nepal, where the disputes over the land have divided the families for generations.
The film is directed by Nigam Shrestha, who turned from his trademark comedies to the serious social drama for this film, and the story of the film exposes the social problem of the land mafia and landlessness in the villages. The film has an ensemble of the finest actors of the industry — the award-winning actor Saugat Malla and the immensely popular comedian Bipin Karki lead the cast, and the veteran actor Harihar Sharma and the actress Menuka Pradhan supported them beautifully, giving the film a strong emotional weight.
Lalpurja stands as an important social drama of the Nepali cinema that puts the sensitive subject of land ownership at the heart of its story. For the audience who is interested in the realistic social issues of the country, this film presents a relevant and painful picture of the land of the village of Nepal, its ownership and the lives that depend on it.
