Anaagat

Anaagat is a 2019 Nepali psychological thriller film directed by Samten Bhutia, with the story by Chandra K. Jha and the screenplay and dialogues by Bikash Dhamala. The film was produced under the banner of Mountain River Films and it stars Priyanka Karki in the lead role of Kriti, with Arpan Thakur as Suresh, Sujan Thapa, Shiva Shrestha and Mithila Sharma in supporting roles. The film was released in theaters on 20 September 2019, and it was promoted as a suspenseful thriller that explores the dark side of marital relationships, a genre that was rare in the Nepali cinema of the time.

The story of the film revolves around Suresh, an amateur artist, and Kriti, his outspoken and ambitious wife. The couple leads a seemingly normal married life, but beneath the surface, tensions begin to build. When Kriti's ex-boyfriend is brutally murdered, the police begin to suspect Suresh, and the couple's fragile marriage begins to crack. As the investigation progresses, Suresh begins to doubt his wife, believing that she may be planning to kill him too, and the film follows the psychological battle between the husband and the wife, where nothing is as it seems.

The film is a slow-burning thriller that relies on the atmosphere, the performances and the growing paranoia of its protagonist. Priyanka Karki, one of the most popular actresses of Nepali cinema, plays the mysterious Kriti, and her performance keeps the audience guessing about her true intentions, while Arpan Thakur delivers a tense performance as the husband trapped in a web of suspicion. The direction of Samten Bhutia, who was also known as a music video director, brought a stylish and moody visual approach to the film, with the cinematography emphasizing the shadows and the tensions of the domestic setting.

The film was noted for attempting a pure thriller genre in the Nepali industry, and it was appreciated for its ambition and its performances, though some critics felt the pacing could have been tighter. The film's suspenseful narrative and the performance of Priyanka Karki were the main highlights of its release, and it introduced a new flavor to the industry, which was dominated by romantic comedies and social dramas.

Anaagat remains an interesting entry in the thriller genre of Nepali cinema, remembered for its attempt to bring a psychological suspense story to the audience of Nepal.
