Bato: Road to Death

Bato: The Road to Death is a 2024 Nepali road thriller film written and directed by the filmmaker Madhan Pat and produced by Chandan Jha under the banner of Kathmandu Films. The movie brings a new tone to the Nepali cinema with the spaces of the night, with Rakshya Thapa, Utpal Jha and Sulakshyan Bharati in the main roles, and it was released into the cinema halls of the country during the lifetime of the production of the company.

In one night in the Valley, three people of the city cross paths: Komal, a dedicated paramedic who is transporting a civilian human heart for a live transplant in an ambulance; Kushmal, a man of the city who carries his own burden of the illness of the mother, and Tony, a street-wise taxi driver who gives them a ride. Their evening becomes the long dark night as they follow a mysterious and dangerous group on the road, a group whose strange rituals of the night makes the night darker. The city reveals a chain of collisions, secrets hidden in the wild monsoon of the capital and a startling maze of faction; the three are forced to a decision that can save the heart in the ambulance and their own lives.

The picture builds tension on the surface of the city, the neon, the rain and the closed flights of a road that no one wants to take. The film was praised for its tight pace, the honest performances and the atmosphere of the world, with the veteran actress Mithila Sharma supporting the crew in an important role of the mother. The specialist the group builds a thriller that offers a new, urban horizon of the modern Nepali cinema, with the cruelty of a real race against the hours of a transplant. Bato rather than "road" is the violence of the fate: after the ticket all passengers cease to be strangers, and the common bond of the immigration or the moral of a hero is written like that, whether it will reach the hospital in time is a question the movie holds until the last frame.
