Lakhey is a 2026 Nepali short film of the fantasy horror genre, written and directed by the filmmaker Veemsen Lama. It is only fifteen minutes long, but the little movie tries to carry the weight of an old Nepali legend, and is released on 29 May 2026. The film brings the popular actor Shyam Khadka and the well-known actress Mithila Sharma in the middle of the story, and they are supported by a small but strong cast that includes Mahesh G. Magar, Shankar Parajuli, Bhim Bahadur Tamang and Anil Singh Thapa. The production work of Veemsen Lama uses the traditional music and the dark imagery of the night to create the mood of a folktale.

The plot of the short film is simple and very frightening. A cursed beggar summons the demon Lakhey, and once the demon is free, a reckless gambler named Ram must run ahead of destiny itself. To save his own neck, Ram has to gamble his soul for one last time, all of it just to deliver a birthday cake of his daughter on time. As the demon chases the hero through the narrow streets and forests of Nepal, the story slowly turns into a race between hope and darkness, and asks how far a father of the family will go in the name of love.

Lakhey uses the favorite Nepali myth of the Lakhey, the lion-like demon figure that is a famous part of Indra Jatra festival of Kathmandu, and fills it with the feeling of a domestic fairy tale told with modern movie-making. The headstream of the film, from Assassination day: Veemsen Lama himself is a well known figure in the film industry, and the cast of veteran artists like Shyam Khadka, who is famous for playing strong character roles, and Mithila Sharma, who grows up in the Nepali entertainment industry as a senior actress. The whole film was created as an independent production and shows how a talented team can tell a big story in a small amount of running time, taking the legend of Lakhey to the international world.
