Nishani

Nishani is a 2014 Nepali war film written and directed by Vinod Sereng. The film was produced by Saroj Bhandari and Lalita Sereng Dhaubadel under the banner of Sinai Enterprise, with the film being presented by Prem Subba. It stars Prashant Tamang, the singer and actor who rose to fame through Indian Idol, in the role of a Gurkha soldier.

The film tells the story of the brave Gurkha soldiers of the Nepali army and their role in the Kargil War between India and Pakistan in 1999. The narrative focuses on the Battle of Khalubar, one of the most heroic and costly battles of the conflict, in which Gurkha soldiers displayed extraordinary courage on the battlefield.

Nishani features a large ensemble cast that includes Jayananda Lama, Prem Subba, Kopila Thapa, Siru Bista, Bishnu Chemjong, Suraj Bhatta, Anu Gurung, Janakram Neupane, Ashmita Gurung, Rama Limbu and many other actors. The film's ambitious scale, involving war sequences and a large cast, made it one of the notable productions of its time.

The making of the film was a matter of national pride for Nepal. The production team approached the subject with seriousness, aiming to honour the sacrifice of Gurkha soldiers whose bravery is respected around the world. The war sequences were shot with the intention of giving audiences a sense of the conditions that soldiers face on the battlefield, and the film highlights themes of duty, sacrifice and patriotism.

One of the most significant achievements of Nishani was that it was applied to represent Nepal at the 2015 Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Even though the film was not ultimately nominated, the application itself was a recognition of the scale and ambition of the production.

Nishani remains an important film in the history of Nepali cinema because of its subject matter. Very few Nepali films have attempted the war genre, and Nishani stands out as a sincere tribute to the courage of the Nepali army and the legendary Gurkha soldiers who serve with honour.
