Buy NowSeto Surya, known for the international audience under the title White Sun, is a 2016 Nepali drama film written and directed by the filmmaker Deepak Rauniyar, and produced in the co-production of Nepal, the Netherlands, the United States and Qatar. The film is the masterpiece of the Nepali cinema of the new generation: it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival of September 2016, beyond the Horizons section of the festival, where it received the Interfaith Award for the films. The movie features the actor Dayahang Rai, Asha Magrati, Rabindra Singh Baniya and Rajesh Raj in the leading roles, and runs about 89 minutes.
The story is set in the last days of the civil war in Nepal, after the peace agreement. Chandra, a young partisan of the Maoist movement who has been fighting for a decade, returns to his remote mountain village after the death of his father. The arrival of the son of the family, however, reopens the old wounds of the community. The dead father must be carried by his sons down the mountain to the river for the cremation, and the family waits under the ancient traditions of the mountain: only men can continue the road, the women of the village are not allowed to. The second part of the picture is a trek of Chandra, his young daughter, the village, over the high trail, the mountain with the body of the father, a journey that reunites the brothers against the backdrop of the hills and reflected the long shadows of the war, down through the body and the soul of the patriotic Nepal.
With the stone of the mountain as a frame, the film builds an intimate ensemble: the brother of the army veteran on the one side and the ideals of the rebel on the other, the widow of the village, the orphans, the guardians of the rituals, the conflict of a family and a nation that continue to fight over the body of the past. The painterly images, the indigenous soundtrack and the silent performances gave the film a wide festival life of the world, in Toronto, in Busan, in Rotterdam, representing Nepal in the race of the international cinema. White Sun questions the price of revolution, the loyalty of the new generation and the still open wounds of the civil war of the country, and today it is considered one of the important works of the modern Nepali cinema.
