Tathastu

Tathastu is a 2015 Nepali action thriller film directed by Shabir Shrestha and produced under the banner of Kites Entertainment, marking the production house's debut film. The movie was released in theaters on January 9, 2015, and stars Rekha Thapa in the leading role of Basanti, with Subash Thapa appearing as her abusive husband Kamal, an influential politician. The film also features Kishor Khatiwada and a strong supporting cast.

The story of Tathastu addresses the serious social issues of domestic violence and marital rape in Nepali society. Basanti is a wife who suffers systematic abuse at the hands of her powerful husband, who believes he can treat her however he wishes because of his political influence. The film follows Basanti's painful journey as she fakes her own death to escape her tormentor, flees her situation, and eventually fights back against the man who destroyed her life. Her story becomes one of survival and resistance against an oppressive system.

Rekha Thapa, who was one of the most prominent actresses in Nepali cinema at the time, carried the film with a performance that drew attention to the plight of abused women. The movie was notable for tackling subjects that were rarely discussed openly in Nepali cinema, using the thriller format to deliver its social message. The action sequences and the tense cat-and-mouse relationship between Basanti and Kamal kept audiences engaged while the film's themes provoked discussion.

Director Shabir Shrestha, who had earlier directed films like Kasle Choryo Mero Man and Kaali, brought a commercial thriller sensibility to the social subject matter. The film's promotional campaign highlighted its bold subject and Rekha Thapa's powerful role, generating significant interest before release.

Tathastu stands as an important film in Nepali cinema for bringing the issue of domestic violence to the mainstream screen. It remains a notable entry in the filmographies of Rekha Thapa and Shabir Shrestha, and an example of how Nepali commercial films used entertainment to address serious social problems.
