Happy New Year

Happy New Year is a 2017 Nepali romantic drama film directed by Dev Kumar Shrestha and produced by Rati Thapa Shrestha, with Kushal Thapa and Kedar Parajuli also credited as producers. The movie stars Kushal Thapa and Sandhya K.C. in the lead roles, with Pukar Gautam in a supporting part. It was released in theaters across Nepal on December 29, 2017, with a runtime of about two hours and ten minutes.

The story of Happy New Year was penned by lead actor Kushal Thapa and follows a romantic narrative set against the backdrop of the new year celebration. The film was shot in Australia with Australian cinematographer Benjamin Drol handling the camera work, giving the movie a distinctive international look. The production company RK M Production presented the film, which combined drama and romance in its storytelling.

Before its release, the film's crew conducted a promotional tour that began in Narayanghat and reached Pokhara, where the team performed songs from the movie at the Pokhara City Hall. Lead actor Kushal Thapa performed at the event, accompanied by musician Binod Dhakal, model Sonika Rokaya and choreographer Rohan Nepali, along with other crew members. The titled song of the film was released in October 2017 as part of the promotional campaign.

The film received attention for its Australian locations and the fresh pairing of Kushal Thapa and Sandhya K.C., who was emerging as a popular actress in Nepali cinema. The festive title and the release timing around the end of the year positioned Happy New Year as a family-oriented romantic entertainment for the holiday season.

Happy New Year added to the growing trend of Nepali films shot abroad, and its release during the final days of 2017 gave audiences a light-hearted romantic option. The movie remains notable in the filmography of director Dev Kumar Shrestha and showcases the international ambitions of Nepali filmmakers of that era.
