Maruni

Maruni is a 2019 Nepali romantic drama that was released in the cinemas of Nepal on 30 August 2019 with a PG certificate from the censor board. The film was directed by Nawal Nepal, who also wrote the story of the picture together with Govinda Phuyal, and it was produced by Punam Gautam. The movie is a different kind of story for the Nepali cinema, because it is the first commercial Nepali film that puts a transgender character in the centre of the story, and the title role was played by the actress Samragyee RL Shah, one of the most popular young stars of the industry at that time.

The plot is a love triangle with a twist. Raj, played by Aayush Shrestha, and Yash, played by Puspa Khadka, are best friends who grew up together, and Raj has always been in love with Yash, even dressing up and playing the bride in school events. But Yash falls in love with Madhu, a common friend played by Rebika Gurung. Broken by the rejection, Raj walks out of the life of his friend and undergoes a gender reassignment surgery to become Suman, played by Samragyee. Years later, Suman meets Yash again as a business partner, and the old feelings return, but this time she turns into a possessive lover who refuses to accept that Yash is married to Madhu. The story follows the struggle of Suman between her love and the reality of the married life of her childhood friend.

The supporting cast of the film includes Sushil Chhetri, Binod Bhattarai, Arjun Shrestha and Sampada Baniya in important roles. The cinematography of the movie was handled by Sanjay Lama, and the music was composed by Arjun Pokharel and Krishna Kafle. The movie received a mixed response from the critics; the reviewer of the Kathmandu Post wrote that the heart of the film was in the right place but the end result was disappointing, because the sensitive topic of the trans community was treated in a purely commercial way. Still, Maruni remains a milestone of the Nepali cinema as the first film of the industry with a transgender character in the lead role, and the full movie is available to watch freely on the YouTube platform.
