Sunpani

Sunpani is a 2015 Nepali social drama film directed by Sabin Banstola, an experienced assistant director of the big screen films and a known director of telefilms, which is his directorial debut on the cinematic screen. The film was released in theaters on 6 February 2015. The film stars Sabin Banstola in the lead role, with Asha Bhusal, Tara K.C., Agraj K.C., Nabin Timalsina and Buddisagar Khanal in the cast. The title 'Sunpani' is a Nepali term that unites the words for gold and water, and the film carries the story of the village and the value of its natural resources in its title.

The film is a socio-drama about social discrimination and the life of the villages of Nepal. Its story deals with the realities of the rural society - the issues of the differences, the inequal status between the classes of the society, the local land and water, and the harsh life of the common village people. The film presents the village setting where the community is guided by the old traditions, and the social discrimination and the rural inequalities become the themes of its drama: the story shows how the simple villagers face injustice and hardship, and the values, the love and the humanity of the film guide the audience through the darkness of its picture of the rural life.

As a social film of its year, Sunpun was released with a series of charity shows in villages before its general release, and it received the recognition of the Nepali cinema awards: the film brought its maker the Best Actor in a Character Role awards at the Dcine Award 2072 and the Nefta Film Award 2072, and the story of the film won the Best Story award at the 2071 Nefta Film Awards. These awards brought the film and its new director into the spotlight of the industry and firmly linked the name of Sabin Bansola with the serious social dramas.

Story of the honest social drama of the villages, the discrimination and the rural reality of Nepal, is remembered as an important and award-winning film of the Nepali cinema of the middle of the decade.
