Buy NowParai, meaning "stranger" or "other", is a Nepali social drama that was released in theatres on 10 January 2014. The film holds a special place in Nepali cinema history because its director, Shiva Regmi, passed away on 9 December 2013 — only a month before the release. In honour of his memory, the producers publicly promised to donate a portion of the film's income to his family, and the movie went on to be remembered as much for that gesture as for its story.
Parai was written by Shiva Regmi along with Shivam Adhikari and was produced by Kunti Shahi, Gobind Shahi and Kamal Khadka. The film stars Gobind Shahi, Garima Panta, Niraj Baral and Nandita K.C. in the lead roles. It was described by those involved as a movie made on a social story — one that deals with human relationships and the conflicts that arise within families and communities, in line with the social-drama tradition that has been a steady presence in Nepali filmmaking.
On the technical side, the music for Parai was composed by Basanta Sapkota, who also contributed lyrics along with Shiv Regmi, Dayaram Pande, Naresh Bhattarai and Nabaraj Lamsal. The songs were sung by popular Nepali playback singers including Deepak Limbu and Rajina Rimal, among others, and the soundtrack added a traditional feel to the film's emotional scenes.
The release of Parai was handled by the banner that presented the film, and its trailer and eventually the full movie found a wide audience online after being uploaded to YouTube. For viewers who enjoy Nepali social dramas with strong family themes, Parai offers a story from a director whose untimely death cut short a promising career — and a reminder of the close community bonds that have always existed within the Nepali film industry.
The film also benefits from the star presence of Garima Panta, an award-winning actress who was at the height of her popularity at the time. With its mix of a heartfelt story, a well-loved cast and a talented music team, Parai remains a notable entry in the Nepali social-drama genre, and one that carries a meaningful story behind its making as well as on the screen.
