Tandav

Tandav is a 2014 Nepali drama film directed by the British filmmaker Murray Kerr and produced by Mohaan Dotel under the banner of Apple Production Film. The movie was released in theaters on August 22, 2014, and marks the debut of the popular Nepali rap singer Aashish Rana, known by his stage name Laure, in the Nepali film industry. The film also stars Namrata Shrestha, Anup Baral, Alan Gurung, Bipin Karki and Bisharad Basnet.

The story of Tandav begins when an arms deal on the Nepal-India border goes wrong, and a group of travelers staying in a border hotel must band together to survive the resulting siege. Aashish Rana plays Amrit, the central character caught in the crisis, while Namrata Shrestha appears as Maya, Anup Baral as Ganesh, Alan Gurung as Amir and Bipin Karki as Pratik. The film combines elements of crime and drama, using the tense hotel setting to explore how ordinary people react under extraordinary pressure.

The cinematography of Tandav was handled by Narendra Mainali, and the film was edited by Banish Shah. As a Smashing Apple production, the film represented an ambitious collaboration between Nepali and British talent, with Murray Kerr bringing an international perspective to the Nepali story.

The trailer of Tandav was released in July 2014 and generated interest because of the unusual casting of rapper Laure in a leading film role, alongside the well-known Namrata Shrestha and rising actors like Bipin Karki and Alan Gurung. The film was promoted as a hard-hitting drama with realistic action sequences. The siege storyline gave the cast the opportunity to perform intense, character-driven scenes within a confined setting.

Tandav remains notable in the history of Nepali cinema for its international production approach and for introducing Laure to film audiences. The movie is also an early example of the action-thriller direction that Bipin Karki would later explore in his career as a leading actor of Nepali cinema.
