Jaari is a 2023 Nepali social drama film, the directorial debut of the Limbu filmmaker Upendra Subba, based on the story written by Suresh Niyong Limbu. The film was produced by the filmmaker Ram Babu Gurung under the banner of Baasuri Films in association with the Kabaddi Productions, and it was released in the cinemas of Nepal on 14 April 2023, on the occasion of the Nepali New Year. After the big hit of the film at the box office and the awards of the public, the story of the film continued in the sequel Jaari 2.

Set in the scenic villages of the eastern Nepal in the year 1995, the film is about the tradition of the Jaari, the compensation custom paid to a former husband upon the remarriage of his wife. Namsang and Hangma are a married Limbu couple. Namsang, a farmer of the patriarchal society, blames his wife for their five years of marriage without a child, and his anger and the pain of the pride lead him to abuse the wife. After a violent quarrel, Hangma decides to end the marriage: she returns the Yubu, the sacred coin of the community, and goes back to her parents home. There she meets Serang during the traditional Palam dance at a village fair, and the two fall in love. Hangma avoids the customs of the society and elopes with Serang, and their second marriage is settled.

The elopement opens the big conflict of the film: the family of Namsang demands the Jaari, the monetary compensation, from the family of the bride, but the family is too poor to pay. Unable to pay and unwilling to burden the old parents, Hangma returns to the house of her former husband, not as his wife but becoming a servant to pay the Jaari through her work. The emotional center of the film is the redemption of Namsang: slowly he sees the sacrifice and the pain of the woman destroyed by his own pride and his anger, and his heart ovates him into a more human man. The film paints the complete society of the Limbu community, its songs, the Palam, the Mundhum and the ethics of the eastern Nepal, and it received a huge success of the audience, with the performance of Dayahang Rai as Namsang and Miruna Magar as Hangma at the soul of the film, supported by Prem Subba, Bijay Baral and Roydeep Shrestha. The film is a great witness of the Nepali society of the year.
