Chhesko

Chhesko is a 2016 Nepali film directed by Suresh Thapa. The film stars Archana Paneru in her debut role, along with Rajan Karki and Karan Shrestha, who is popularly known as Crazy. The movie was released in Nepali cinemas on June 3, 2016, on the same day as the critically acclaimed film Kalo Pothi.

The story of Chhesko deals with serious and dark themes, including rape, drug abuse and crime. The film attempts to explore how these issues affect the lives of young people in Nepal, and it was promoted as a film with a glamour quotient designed to attract audiences with its bold content and stylish presentation.

One of the most talked-about aspects of the film before its release was the casting of Archana Paneru in the lead role. Paneru was brought into the project at a later stage, a decision that sparked controversy within the industry. Actresses Poojana Pradhan and Pabitra Acharya protested the late casting, adding to the headlines surrounding the movie. Despite the controversy, Paneru made her debut with this film, and the attention on the casting helped generate curiosity among audiences.

The film reflects the trends of Nepali commercial cinema of the mid-2010s, when filmmakers often used bold themes and glamorous presentations to compete for box office attention. The music of the film, featuring popular songs, was promoted heavily before the release to build interest among moviegoers.

Chhesko was released in a competitive period, going up against Kalo Pothi, which went on to earn international acclaim. While Chhesko could not match the critical success of its competitor, it remains a part of the record of Nepali cinema from that year.

For those interested in Nepali commercial cinema and the controversies that surrounded it in that era, Chhesko provides an example of how glamour, serious social themes and industry disputes combined in the filmmaking landscape of 2016 Nepal.
