Highway is a 2012 Nepali drama film written and directed by the filmmaker Deepak Rauniyar, and it was the first feature film of the director who later became famous for the White Sun. The movie is a co-production of the Nepal with the international production house Louverture Films, and it made the history of the national cinema when it premiered in the Panorama section of the Berlin International Film Festival in February 2012. The film was later released in the theaters of Nepal on 20 July 2012 and it became a milestone in the new wave of the Nepali cinema.

The film takes place along the highway that connects the eastern Nepal with the capital, during the days of the nationwide band, with the highways in the style of the strikes of the post civil war period of the country. The miracle of the political movements, the pickets of the students, and every means of transport hold the advisory. The passengers of a small bus, travelling to Kathmandu from the east, are shown in the middle of this blockade. The characters of the film, an elderly woman who travels for the medicine of son, a physical officer, a farm boy and his friend, the couples and the husband of a family, are forced to watch the way power the politics of the nation, and the bus becomes the microcosm of the whole society, with its own information, memory and the vision of the Nepal as the long road rises through the hills.

The movie keeps its own visual language, calmly structured learning through the shadows along the street, the gathering, always expanding, of the crowd depending the vehicles. The film is less about the destination than the detours, and the paths the characters build to survive the blockade reflect the way of the country. The cast includes the celebrated actors Dayahang Rai, Asha Magarati and the returning roles of the rural Nepal. The film was received around the world as a powerful and gentle portrait of a nation standing still, waiting for the road to the future, and it traveled the film festivals of the world, winning audience of cinema lovers, and is considered a landmark in the new cinema approaches history of the country of the cinema of the Himalayas.
