Pandit Bajeko Lauri

Pandit Bajeko Lauri is a 2018 Nepali social drama that was released in the cinemas of Nepal on 20 July 2018 with an Adult certificate from the censor board. The film was directed by Dipak Oli, and the story, the screenplay and the dialogue of the movie were written by Mahesh Dawadi. The movie shows the audience a glimpse of the life in the villages of Nepal, and it is one of those films that try to tackle the social issues that are begging for attention in the country, away from the mainstream commercial formulas.

The plot of the film revolves around the life of Sitaram, played by Praween Khatiwada, who is a respected pandit in the village, and his lauri, a wooden stick which he uses while performing the rituals. The story takes a turn when Chaite, played by Pramod Agrahari, comes to the village with the mission to end the badi practice, the age-old tradition of the exploitation of the lower caste women, which is still prevalent in the village. For that, he has to take on the popular panditji and change the way the people look at the lower caste women in the village. The film shows how the men use their wives to earn a living and how the casteism still exists in the society. The first half of the movie ends on a cliffhanger, and the second half revolves around Sitaram, Chaite and Mandira, played by Sandhya KC, all of them facing a life-changing situation.

The cast of the film included Bholaraj Sapkota as the half-brother of Sitaram, Bijay Baral, Mariska Pokharel in the role of a mute girl, Anupama Bhandari, Lokendra Lekhak and Kamal Gaule in the supporting roles. The reviewer of OnlineKhabar praised the story of the movie, writing that it flows at a good pace and is quite original, and it gives all the actors the chance to show their talent, even though the writer could have gone deeper into the issue. The film highlights the backwardness of the people living in the villages of Nepal, and after its theatrical run the full movie was uploaded for free on the YouTube platform, where it continues to find new viewers.
