Buy NowMa Ta Marchhu Ki Kya Ho is a Nepali comedy film produced by the immensely popular television duo Sitaram Kattel, better known as Dhurmus, and Kunjana Ghimire, known as Suntali. The film continues the comic tradition that made their television programmes household names across Nepal, translating their signature flavour of family comedy, village life and wordplay into a full-length feature. It was created during the pandemic period, when Nepali cinema was largely shut down.
The story of the film is set around the Chitwan countryside, where the duo has a long association with local audiences. It deals with a series of everyday situations, comic misunderstandings and quarrels that quickly escalate in the lively style of the duo's classic work. Since the movie was shot during curfew, the filming itself was a small-scale affair, with limited locations, yet the warmth of Nepali village life was turned into the strength of the story, and close shots of families gathered at home carry the feel of the era.
The film stars a cast of well-known television comedy actors who were familiar to audiences from the productions of Amusement, including Ravi Giri, Buddhi Tamang, Vijaya Baral and a number of supporting artists of the Nepali television world. The chemistry between the actors is the central point of the entertainment, as the dialogue are delivered with fast-paced exchanges and monologues on everyday Nepali topics, ranging from household chores, labour abroad, mother-in-law ploys and the emptiness of official work in the countryside.
Since the movie halls were closed due to the nation-wide lockdown, Ma Ta Marchhu Ki Kya Ho was released on digital platforms, proving itself among the early Nepali titles released through the OTT model. On the impatience or dominance of big-screen release, the movie was distributed online first, in keeping with the new realities of the pandemic, and garnered attention among the users who were looking for new Nepali content within the four walls of their homes.
While the movie is not a landmark of serious cinema, it has an important place as the experiment of the pandemic, and as an expression of the popular face of Nepali entertainment. For the fans of the Dharmad-Suntali universe, the film is the revisit of the favourite humour and for the researchers of the time, it is also the document of how creativity functioned in the most limiting times.
