Bhairav

Bhairav is a 2015 Nepali action drama film produced and directed by Nikhil Upreti, one of the most popular action heroes of the Nepali cinema. The film was released in theaters on 28 August 2015. It is the comeback film of the actor Upreti, who had been absent from the big screen for about six years, and it is also the directorial debut of Nikhil Upreti as a filmmaker; the film was produced with the involvement of the producer Ratan Daruwalla. The film stars Nikhil Upreti in the title role of Inspector Bhairav Kharel, a police officer, with Anu Shah, Muralidhar, Nagendra Raj, Robin Hood Sen, Keshav Rai, Jay Kishan Basnet, Arun Regmi and Ratan Daruwalla in the cast.

Bhairav is an action film based on the story of the criminal activities and the politics that frequently take place at the India-Nepal border. The story is developed around the police officer of the border town of the Tarai, Inspector Bhairav Kharel: he is an honest policeman who fights the criminal gangs, the arms and the smuggling that operate across the border, and the corruption and the political powers that protect the criminals. The film shows the hero in the classic action style of the Nepali cinema - with fights and stunts - as he confronts the underworld and the corrupt forces of the border region, and the drama of the film combines serious themes with the entertainment of the action genre.

Being the comeback of one of the most celebrated action stars, Bhairav was one of the most awaited movies of the year of its release, and the trailer of the film, full of the actor's action, was widely appreciated by the audience. The most applauded element of the film was the performance of the veteran actor Murali Dhar as the antagonist, which was considered by the critics as the real highlight of the film; the critics, however, were of the opinion that the story of the film was inspired by the Bollywood and the South Indian films, and that the film was not a sufficiently thrilling watch despite its action.

In its own way, Bhairav succeeded and became one of the highest grossing Nepali films of the year of its release; it remains the film that brought the action legend Nikhil Upreti back to the Nepali screen and that marked his debut as the director and producer of the cinema.
