Buy NowDiarry is a 2017 Nepali romantic thriller film directed by Anil Yonjan. The movie is notable for casting Rekha Thapa in her first negative role as a character named Rani, a departure from the romantic heroine parts she was known for. The film also stars Chhulthim Gurung, Sunny Singh and Dinesh DC in important roles.
Diarry was released in Nepali cinemas on May 19, 2017. The story revolves around a dreamy young woman named Zoya who pours her intimate thoughts and secrets into her personal diary. When Zoya is found murdered, the people around her are left in shock. The central mystery of the film is the diary itself, which passes into the hands of a young man named Swopnil. As he reads through her entries, he discovers that the diary contains evidence that could reveal the identity of her killer.
The film builds its suspense around this diary, using it as the key to unlocking the truth behind the murder. As Swopnil follows the clues found in its pages, he finds himself in danger, because the murderer will stop at nothing to keep the secrets hidden. The romantic elements of the story emerge through the relationships that Zoya had with the people around her, and the film slowly pieces together what really happened to her.
Rekha Thapa's decision to play against type as the villain was one of the main talking points of the film before its release. Audiences were curious to see the popular actress, usually seen in sympathetic heroine roles, take on a negative character. Her performance added a new dimension to the thriller.
Upon release, Diarry received a mixed response from critics. The Himalayan Times published a review of the film under the headline "Mediocre Diarry", noting that while the premise of the story had potential, the execution did not fully live up to it. Nevertheless, the film remains an interesting experiment in the romantic thriller genre within Nepali cinema.
For fans of Nepali thrillers, Diarry represents an attempt to blend romance with mystery, a combination that was not very common in the Nepali film industry at the time.
